About Hujar: Peter Hujar was born October 11, 1934 in Trenton, New Jersey. Hujar’s father abandoned his mother while she was still pregnant. Hujar lived on a farm with his Ukrainian grandparents until age twelve, when he moved to NYC to live with his mother and stepfather. He left that abusive household at sixteen and pursued his interest in photography. He became a fixture in the art world of 1970-80s lower Manhattan. He was active in the gay liberation movement and associated with numerous artists including David Wojnarowicz. He died from AIDS on November 25, 1987.
